Celebrating 75 years of service: Jersey Fire & Rescue marks 75 years with spectacular Open Day
Hundreds of Islanders gathered at the States of Jersey Fire & Rescue Service headquarters in Rouge Bouillon, St Helier, on Saturday, 31 May, to celebrate the service's 75th anniversary. The open day offered attendees a unique glimpse into the daily operations and rich history of Jersey's firefighting community.
The event featured live demonstrations, including a dramatic rope rescue from a third-floor window, showcasing the skills firefighters employ during cliff and sea rescues. Visitors also explored fire engine tours, interactive stalls, and a museum exhibit detailing the service's evolution since replacing the St Helier Fire Brigade in 1950.
Chief Fire Officer Paul Brown emphasized the service's integral role in the community, stating: "It's not just 75 years of the States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service, it's 75 years of being a fundamental part of our community.
"We don't exist for any other reason than to protect the people of Jersey and their interests."
The open day not only celebrated past achievements but also aimed to inspire future generations. On-call firefighter Beth Bell, expressed enthusiasm about engaging with young attendees, particularly girls, highlighting the importance of representation in the field.
The Service also extended heartfelt thanks to the States of Jersey Police, who joined the Open Day, for their thoughtful anniversary gift — a handcrafted wooden plaque made by PC Abreu and presented to Chief Fire Officer Paul Brown by Chief of Police Robin Smith during the celebrations.
The success of the event underscores the community's appreciation for the dedication and bravery of Jersey's firefighters over the past 75 years and drew comments on social media praising the organisers.
