A Jersey Firefighter has completed a huge challenge, by running twice around Jersey for charity – a total of 96 miles, or 150km.
In taking on this epic feat, Matt Roberts from White Watch is raising money for FOJO Friends of Jersey Oncology and the Fire Fighters Charity. All funds raised are to be split 50/50.
He started at La Frigate at 4pm on Easter Saturday (19 April) and followed the Island Walk route anticlockwise around Jersey.
Once he was back at the Waterfront, he then turned around and did the whole thing again in the opposite direction.
Some of our firefighters, family and friends joined Matt along the route, to keep him company and offer moral support throughout the challenge. Out of 23 hours of running, Matt was only by himself for ten minutes.
The States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service is so proud of the incredible effort he’s putting in, to raise money for two great causes.
After crossing the finish line, Matt said: “It was actually really enjoyable and was a massive team effort. Out of 23 hours of solid running, I was on my own for less than 10 minutes.
“I think that’s a testament for the Fire Service and friends and family. It was incredible. I couldn’t have asked for anything better.
“It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I hit a big low the second time around on Bonne Nuit and Les Platons, that really drained me, and the last bit of the East coast was a bit of a slog. But all in all, I’m really happy with the result and that’s down to everyone. I really appreciate it.
“I genuinely didn’t think I’d raise over £1,000 so £5,000 is incredible. If anyone would still like to donate, please do!”
