Hotel evacuated

Just after midnight Jersey Fire and Rescue received a call for an alarm actuating and smoke visible on the second floor of the Premier Inn Hotel in Bath Street. 2 fire engines with firefighters from Red Watch and the duty manager were dispatched to the incident.

On arrival the first crews prepared to enter with 2 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus with a medium hose whilst the remaining crews set up another medium hose for safety.

The Hotel had been evacuated and the hotel duty manager was available to provide information regarding the location of the smoke logged area and how to access it, they were also able to confirm that all persons had been evacuated.

A room on the second floor was quickly identified as being the main cause for concern and the breathing apparatus team made entry to extinguish any fire within this room. Once access had been gained it was quickly established that there wasn’t a fire in this room, although the smoke did originate from it.

The smoke had filled the corridor directly outside of this room when the occupier left and crews ventilated the area to allow the residents back into the hotel and their rooms.

The cause and origin of the smoke is under investigation.

The Premier Inn carried out their evacuation and investigation procedures and were clearly identifiable to our crews on arrival, providing us with important information to assist us with our duties and we’d like to thank them for their assistance.

Due to the potential for this to have been a large incident the States of Jersey Police and the Ambulance Service also responded although thankfully not required.
