In the event of an emergency call 999
Just before 18:00 this evening, Friday the 13th, the Emergency Services Control Centre received an emergency call from a distressed dog owner reporting that their pet had fallen over a wall and down a cliff face at Fort Regent.
White Watch were immediately mobilised, and quickly arrived at the scene. With the assistance of staff and bystanders, Firefighters were directed to the area where they met the concerned owner. It was established that Luna, a young and lively female Cockapoo, had jumped onto a wall and accidentally fallen around 25 to 30 metres (approximately 80 feet) down a steep cliff face.
Crews quickly deployed rope rescue equipment and lowered a Firefighter over the edge to search for Luna, who was not visible from above. Thankfully, the Firefighter located the shaken but conscious pup, secured her safely, and both were winched back to safety in swift time.
Initial checks by Fire Service personnel found that Luna appeared shaken and stressed but thankfully uninjured. She was further assessed by the attending JSPCA officers and the States Vet, before being taken to the Village Vets for x-rays. We are pleased to confirm that Luna has sustained no broken bones and remains under observation, in safe hands.
Watch Commander Ryan extended heartfelt thanks to the JSPCA and the States Vet for their prompt and professional attendance at the scene. He also praised Luna’s owner for making the right decision by not attempting the rescue themselves, avoiding further risk to life.
“This could have ended very differently,” said Watch Commander Ryan. “Thanks to the actions of Luna’s owner and the teamwork between our emergency responders and animal care professionals, we have a happy ending. Luna was incredibly lucky today – perhaps proof that Friday the 13th isn’t always unlucky!”
