Preparations for Island Walk in 30 degree heat

Even with temperatures expected to hit 30 degrees on Saturday – the hottest day the Island Walk has ever seen – our firefighters remain determined to complete the challenge in full firefighting kit.

They're no strangers to extreme heat, often facing temperatures of up to 1,000 degrees in short, intense bursts.

Walking in four teams of four, alongside Firefighter Marcin Mietelka who is tackling the full distance, they'll be watching each other’s backs every step of the way.

Teamwork is at the heart of everything we do, and while they know it’ll be tough, they’re ready. Hydration packs are loaded, safety procedures are in place, and our support vehicle will be on hand throughout the day.

We’ll be tracking them every step of the way and, if needed, they’ll scale back the challenge by dropping parts of their kit for certain sections to prioritise safety while still pushing themselves to complete the walk.

They understand the risks – but they’re trained to recognise the signs of heat stress and dehydration, and those risks have been carefully mitigated through our robust safety processes.

That’s the spirit of the Jersey Fire & Rescue. We wish them the very best of luck.

The teams are taking on this challenge to raise funds for two important causes – Fire Fighters Charity and the Around the Island Walk Trust – and would be hugely grateful for your support and sponsorship.
