Rope rescue at Grosnez

Earlier today, (31 July) the JFRS were called to deal with a situation at Grosnez which required a rope rescue, having received a call just after 11 am.

A member of the public had contacted the Police about a person seemingly stuck on rocks and unable to get back up to the headland. Police informed the JFRS.

JFRS responded with the Rope Rescue Team, 10 personnel from Green Watch in one Fire Engine, the Rescue Unit, and an All-Terrain Vehicle. The Duty Station Commander also responded.

The Rope Rescue Team established contact with States of Jersey Police on scene and set up to rescue the casualty once their location had been established.

Due to the difficult position and complex nature of the incident several other agencies were requested to attend to assist.

This included Jersey Coastguard, the Honorary Police, the Ambulance Service, and the RNLI.

HMS Tyne was also contacted by Coastguard as they were in the area, and they stood by offshore in case their assistance was required. A helicopter from Cherbourg was also on stand-by and available if necessary.

Once the casualty had been assessed by the attending Paramedic a decision was made to bring the casualty up the cliff side in a basket stretcher before being carried to the waiting ambulance and transported to hospital.

Station Commander Mark Bailey-Walker said: “This  incident was complex and the rescue took almost 2 hours from the first phone call to the casualty being handed over to paramedics. Multi-agency collaborative working was essential to the safe and successful resolution of this incident."
