Seventeen firefighters complete the hottest ever Round Island Walk in their firefighting kit
Seventeen firefighters from the States of Jersey Fire & Rescue Service have completed a remarkable 48.1-mile charity challenge around Jersey’s coastline – in firefighting kit and under blazing 30°C heat.
Taking part in this year’s Island Walk, the team has so far raised over £5,000 in support of The Fire Fighters Charity and the Around the Island Walk Trust.
Sixteen firefighters tackled the route in a relay format, split into four teams of four, while one firefighter, Marcin Mietelka, completed the entire distance solo. He was supported throughout by his colleagues, who joined him every step of the way along the route.
Wearing full firefighting gear – including trousers, helmets and breathing apparatus, weighing around 25 kilograms – the team took on the added challenge of carrying extra weight and insulation in already tough conditions.
The public played a huge part in lifting spirits and encouraging the team throughout the day. Applause and cheers met the firefighters at every rest stop along the route, while messages of support flooded in on social media as islanders followed their progress and donated to the cause.
The funds raised will help support serving and retired firefighters through The Fire Fighters Charity, as well as a range of community causes funded by the Around the Island Walk Trust.
The effort has captured the attention and admiration of the wider Jersey community, with donations still coming in and the total continuing to rise.
