In the event of an emergency call 999
Two firefighters in breathing apparatus rescued a woman from a smoke-filled flat near Snow Hill this afternoon.
Unattended cooking is thought to have been the cause.
A working smoke alarm alerted neighbours to call 999, which enabled firefighters to respond quickly to this incident.
Ambulance crews cared for the woman on scene before transporting her to hospital, due to smoke inhalation.
Station Commander Paul McGrath said: “Unattended cooking is an all-too-common cause of domestic fires. Please do not put yourself or anyone else at risk by leaving cooking unattended.
“This incident also highlights the importance of how a working smoke detector can alert those nearby to a fire before it takes hold.
“Thanks to the actions of the neighbours in this case, the amount of damage to the property was greatly reduced and prevented a more serious incident occurring.”

Matt Roberts set off at 4pm on Easter Saturday and ran for 23 hours to complete the challenge.
